I used to 'settle' for friends. I was routinely used and treated poorly. I was lied to and stepped on for them to try to lift themselves up. I justified this treatment by saying to myself "At least I have friends" and "I'm helping them reach their goals, I should be happy for them." Not surprisingly, I wasn't happy at all. I felt used and excruciately lonely, whether I was alone or not. I honestly don't know what set off the change in me, but instead of just saying it, I BELIEVED that I deserved better. I stopped talking to a large percentage of my old "friends" and severely limited contact with the ones I couldn't cut off completely. I was lonely for a moment, then I realized that I was free! I started going places I wanted to go and doing things I wanted to do and have made true and healthy friends in the process! If I need them, I know they are there, instead of just me being the one catering to everyone's needs. It has truly changed my life just by believing that I deserved what I wanted! :) Two years later, I'm happier, skinnier, have more close friendhips than I've had my whole life, and I'm actually interested in getting out of bed in the morning!
